Q. Are Engineered Floors the same as laminate floors such as Pergo?
A. Absolutely not! Laminate floors are photographs of wood printed on plastic and glued to a particle board plank. They cannot be re-finished. Scratches and dings often go right through to the particle-board core inviting many problems concerning moisture and longevity.
Q. What are Solid Bamboo floors?
A. The grain of a solid floor is oriented in one direction throughout the body of the plank. Whereas an Engineered floor has a “cross-laminated” core, a solid floor does not. Solids are also often aesthetically pleasing to a consumer who likes the notion of a 100% bamboo floor.
Q. How are the bamboo floors installed?
A. Our exotic solids floors can either be floated, nailed, or glued. We offer all of these alternatives based upon your personal housing situation and needs.
Q. What does “Carbonized” mean?
A. Carbonizing is a process wherein the bamboo is steamed at a higher temperature for a period of time thereby changing the color of the sugars and starches in the wood. The result is a rich, coffee and cream color that runs through the entire thickness of the bamboo.
Q. What are your floors finished with?
A. All of our pre-finished floors are finished with Aluminum-Oxide. Aluminum-Oxide is literally a mineral resin that is spread onto the floor much the same way a printing press spreads ink. Several layers of Aluminum-Oxide are applied; each layer cured with intense UV rays. The resulting finish is at least 5 or 6 times more durable than a traditional Swedish Finish. This means that you will not develop “traffic patterns” where the finish is worn away in heavily used areas of your home. Aluminum-Oxide is also non-toxic. It is inert; it does not off-gas harmful chemicals as a Swedish Finish does.
Q. What are expansion gaps?
A. If you look at the core layer of the engineered floors, you will notice that it is made up of several strips of wood that run across the width of the plank, rather than one solid core piece of wood. There are little spaces between each of these "fillets" or strips of core. They are especially noticeable on the Premium species. These are done this way on purpose (as opposed to being a consequence of sloppy production) so that as temperature and/or humidity change, therefore causing the wood to want to move, the air between these strips of wood allows core layer to shift without effecting the overall length of the wood core. Those spaces between the core pieces are called expansion gaps.
